We are grateful to Temas en Tulsa for inviting our Executive Director, Dr. Carolina Hernandez, MD, MSc, MBA, to the table for a new video interview about the work happening at UMA Center of Tulsa — and what comes next for our community health hub in East Tulsa.
Temas en Tulsa has become one of the most important Spanish-language voices in our city — a space where community leaders, public servants, and neighbors get to speak at length, in their own language, about the issues that actually shape daily life here. Being asked to share UMA’s story on that platform is both a privilege and a responsibility: it means speaking directly to the families we serve, not about them.
In the conversation, Dr. Hernandez walks through UMA’s origins, the realities of health access for East Tulsa residents, and the vision for expansion — more room for on-site services, deeper partnerships with healthcare and education providers, expanded behavioral health capacity, and stronger pathways into the economic opportunities our neighbors are already building. She speaks honestly about what has worked, what is still hard, and why community trust is the infrastructure everything else depends on.
“When we talk about health in our community, we can’t only talk about doctors and clinics. We have to talk about trust, about language, about dignity — about whether people feel seen when they walk in the door.
Cuando hablamos de salud en nuestra comunidad, no podemos hablar solo de médicos y clínicas. Tenemos que hablar de confianza, de idioma, de dignidad.
We encourage you to watch the full conversation above. Whether you are a longtime supporter, a neighbor just learning about UMA, or a partner considering how to plug in — esta conversación es para ti. And if what you hear resonates, we would love to continue the conversation with you directly.
Our thanks to the Temas en Tulsa team for the invitation, the careful questions, and the continued commitment to telling Tulsa’s stories en español. The work continues — and it continues out loud, in every language our community speaks.
